Vol. 10.1 VGSD Newsletter May 2010

VGSD's been busy with home garden builds, a raised bed installation at The Seasons retirement home in Coronado, garden assistance to the MAAC Charter School in Chula Vista, completion of our first all-Spanish language garden education class, the beginning of a garden education class in Vista for apartment residents, facilitating the moving of 120 hay bales from the TLC Garden in Tierrasanta to the New Roots Community Farm in City Heights and the celebration of our first anniversary of building and assisting in the building of gardens! Whew! Pictures will help tell the story of the month.

VGSD Year 1
a photographic review

First Year Success!

Many thanks to our outstanding volunteer crew who makes all these projects and events possible. From March 2009 through March 2010, I estimate VGSD provided over 2500 hours of volunteer garden building, garden education, coordination, and outreach. That's almost 7 hours of volunteer time per day for 365 days! That's amazing!

Our Action Team, garden educators, garden guides, garden build volunteers and tabling helpers all contributed to this great first year accomplishment. Thanks also to San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project, our fiscal sponsor, for their continuous support and encouragement.

Meet the Victory Gardeners and enter to win a garden!

April will be a full month of outreach to the greater San Diego community at various Earth Day and environmental celebrations throughout the county. VGSD will be sharing our programs at these events:

  • May 16 at Riverfest, Qualcomm Stadium
  • June 19 at the Del Mar Fair
  • June 19 Juneteenth celebration in Southeast San Diego.

Free Garden Raffle

At each event, VGSD will be offering the chance to win a free garden build. Attendees who make a donation will get tickets for a chance to win a garden build. We will collect tickets from April until June 19. We'll draw the winning ticket on June 20 and notify the winner. All donations will support VGSD's garden building and education efforts. So get ready for a busy Spring. We hope to see you at lots of events! Grow it forward!

Urban Gardening Workshop

Saturday, May 8

Patagonia Store, Cardiff
2185 San Elijo Avenue
760.634.9886

Ever wanted to have a sustainable garden but don’t know how to get started? Then join us a Patagonia Cardiff for a workshop on urban gardening taught by folks from VGSD. We will be demonstrating how to build small planter boxes for four different types of vegetables and plant gardens that fit in small areas like your home’s patio or deck. The first class is at noon with a second at 2pm. Each session is one-hour long. The workshop takes place on our patio with limited seating available on a first-come, first-seated basis.
