VGSD Newsletter May-June Vol. 3
VGSD goes public!
Victory Gardens was a presence at Earth Fair 2009 at Balboa Park; UCSD's "Think Global, Eat local" event; Earth Fairs at San Diego City College and Cuyamaca College; The Food Justice Conference at SDCC; The Healing Arts Festival at Balboa Park; and Women's Fest 2009 in Hillcrest. Each event saw lots of enthusiastic visitors to our table and the ranks of VGSD have swelled to over 200! Many thanks to our volunteers who helped at each tabling event. Our goal was to get VGSD's programs out to the public and we did it!
VGSD's first garden classes
start in June
Details for VGSD's first garden classes are being finalized. We're looking for our first session of six classes to start in June. Over 25 people are on the waiting list! Look for details on the VGSD website in the coming week.
Grants we've applied for
We have over $16,000 in grant applications pending to fund home, school and community garden projects. Cross your fingers . . . and toes!
$500 donation from The Gerson Institute
The Gerson Institute, an international organization dedicated to the alternative, non-toxic treatment of disease, using the Gerson Therapy, has become a major VGSD partner, donating $500.00 to our efforts. Thanks to Institute Director Anita Wilson and all the members of The Gerson Institute.
$200 donation from Whole Earth Acre Nursery
Whitney and Sui Lin Robinson, proprietors and growers at Whole Earth Acre Nursery in Vista have thrown their support behind VGSD with a generous donation of $200 (made easy using the online PayPal button) and pledge their continued endorsement of the project. Though they don't have a website, they sell some of the best herb and vegetable seedlings, grown specifically for this area, at the Hillcrest Farmers Market on Sundays and the Carlsbad Farmers Market on Saturdays.
Volunteers needed!
We have several garden projects under consideration and should be finalizing them very soon. As soon as that's done, we'll be needing volunteers for installations and "garden guides" to assist our newest gardeners.
How can you help?
Donate! Keep our projects growing with your contribution to the $500.00 matching grant donation. The deadline is June 1st! We are only $140 away! Help put us over the top . . . and beyond. Click here to donate. It's quick and easy.
Donate $20+ and get a VGSD T-shirt! They're garden chic! You can get them by donating $20 or more at any VGSD event. We're working to get this option available online soon for donations of $30 or more.
Volunteer! Many opportunities are coming up in the next two months: tabling at events, garden installations and always plenty of office work!
Help with a garden building project. It's garden immersion education! There will be more opportunities to spread the VGSD word at various events around San Diego. Take an hour or two and share our mission.
Spread the word! Tell your friends about Victory Gardens San Diego and encourage them to join. To do so, just tell them about our website.
