Vol. 3 VGSD Newsletter July 2009

VGSD helps Pazzaz get growing!

Saturday June 13th found VGSD volunteers Nan Renner and Jolie Borboa at the Pazzaz Family Support Center. Adults and kids in the Team Support program put together a beautiful raised bed garden in about two hours from a previously unused area. Tomatoes, corn, beans, squash, strawberries, watermelon, oregano and onions were a few of the plants requested by the families for their garden. Kids learned about different plants and their watering needs. It was discussed how plants and humans need good care to thrive. Click here to check out Pazzaz programs. Many thanks to the Pazzaz staff, Pazzaz families and VGSD volunteers Jolie Borboa and friend Deniece and Nan Renner.

VGSD receives gift from Leo S. Guthman Fund

On June 30, VGSD became the grateful recipient of a $500 gift from Lynne Rosenthal in honor of Beth Rosenthal. Lynne is very interested in the work of Victory Gardens San Diego and her generosity is gratefully appreciated!

Thank you Blind Lady Alehouse!

VGSD'ers celebrated at the Blind Lady Ale House on Sunday June 21. BLAH owners, Lee and Jenniffer Chase, Jeff Motch and Clea Hantman opened their doors to VGSD, offering a $1.00 donation for each beer sold that day. We met lots of folks interested in good food, good beer and gardens. At the end of the day, we netted almost $500.00 in donations and beer sales! That's a lot of garden funding! Thanks again to Blind Lady for their strong support of VGSD and the San Diego community.

First VGSD U Garden Class Nears Commencement!

The 15 charter members of the VGSD University of Gardening class are two sessions away from graduation. In the process of their education, they've prepped a yard for a garden build, prepared garden beds, installed sprinkler systems, and planted Shelly's garden with a wide variety of edibles. One more class on organic pest management and then it's graduation day, featuring a harvest and potluck feast on July 18. Thanks to Janet Lancaster and Shelly and Jason Stewart for opening their homes to our students. Thanks also to Mel, Mindy, Julia, Bob and Anita for their instruction. Look for an email announcing our second series of classes. We're also considering some specialty in-depth one-day sessions on topics such as water harvesting, composting and seed saving. Let us know via email what other topics interest you.

VGSD Joins the Internet Online Community!

Always seeking to expand of gardening community, the VGSD Action Committee took steps to give us a broader E- presence via Google, Facebook and Twitter. Thanks to Cynthia for managing our "Tweets", about upcoming events involving VGSD and/or our partners. Thanks also to Julianna for developing our Facebook page and Erin for creating our Google site. Below are the links to each site. I encourage you to sign up and stay connected with VGSD and our partners. We want to build an interactive San Diego garden community and these sites will allow for questions and discussions regarding garden and food issues. Here are the links to each site:

Two Garden Installations Set for July.

We have two garden builds scheduled for July. One is in South Park on Sunday, July 12. It will be a front yard garden featuring edible and medicinal plants. The second is scheduled for Saturday July 25 at a home daycare center in Chula Vista. We're excited to do these two gardens as they offer not only food for the owners, but a chance to educate and be a source of healing in the community. Look for a volunteer email coming to your desktop soon. We have several other Free Garden applications and Donation garden applications under consideration for August, September and on into fall. Stay tuned.
