Thank you Johnson Ohana
Charitable Foundation!
We are most pleased to announce that community-minded, environmentally friendly musician Jack Johnson and his Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation have awarded VGSD a $5000 grant in support of our U. Garden classes! This grant, the largest we've recieved so far, will work wonders as we work to bring more organic gardening classes to more people in more areas of San Diego.
If you'd like to be involved, as a garden educator (experience required!), a teacher's apprentice (learn while doing), or a student at an upcoming class series, please apply by clicking here and let us know what you're interested in.
More classes will be starting up soon. Our last classes filled up quickly, so apply now to get on the list.
VGSD receives gift from Leo S. Guthman Fund
On June 30, VGSD became the grateful recipient of a $500 gift from Lynne Rosenthal of Stamford, Connecticut in honor of Beth Rosenthal. Lynne is very interested in the work of Victory Gardens San Diego and her generosity is gratefully appreciated!
Donate to FHTPaOHCYoC!
Please donate to support Forty Hoses, Three Picks and One Hundred Cubic Yards of Compost, or as we like to call it, the FHTPaOHCYoC Project!
VGSD has chosen to help the International Rescue Committee's New Roots Community Farm near Chollas Parkway as one of it's community garden projects. The pictures tell the story well. From a long vacant lot, The IRC has created the beginnings of what will be over two acres of community garden plots that will be used by residents in this underserved community. Getting permits from the city took a huge chunk of money from the budget set aside for building the gardens. The irrigation infrastructure has been installed but.... they only have two hoses. They need to dig holes, but the ground is so hard, they are breaking picks at a rapid rate. There's lots of land, but not much quality soil so that's why we are creating FHTPaOHCYoC Project
- $20 will buy one quality 50-foot hose (we need forty!)
- $30 will buy a quality pick (we need three!)
- $150 will buy a 10 cubic yard delivery of high quality compost.
If you'd like to donate via PayPal to this worthy cause, click here. After logging into PayPal, click on "Is this donation for specific program?" Put in the box, IRC, then indicate which item or items you'd like to fund: hoses, picks, compost or all three. 100% of your tax-deductible contribution will be sent from VGSD to the IRC. Thanks for helping create a more sustainable San Diego!
South Park Victory Garden Completed
July 12th found 15 VGSD volunteers digging, building and planting at the home of Miles Thomas and Julie Lively. Miles is a licensed acapuncturist and very interested in herbal remedies and nutritional health. Julia Dashe was our Garden Guide and created a beautiful edible landscape for Miles and Julie. Their garden features dwarf citrus, a lettuce bed, herbs, corn, onions, goji berries and much more. We also created a two compartment compost bin. Many thanks to Julia and our hearty volunteers Mike, Jonathan, Laura, Yvette, Suzanne, Patricia, Ben, Cindy, Don, Kyle, Jeffrey, Mel and Kasey.
VGSD Graduates First U Garden Class
With much pomp and circumstance, or perhaps many plants and garden plots, our charter class of VGSD's University of Gardening graduated Saturday, July 18 at Shelly Stewart's home. Having picked, dug, pulled, irrigated, harvested and composted, our first class has earned their U Garden degrees. Many thanks to our Class "professors" Mindy, Julia, Mel, Anita and Bob. We look forward to this class and future classes growing great food and helping others do the same. Congratulations!
