how much water does a garden use vs. a lawn?

Vegetables do not need more water than grass. Grass takes between 30- and 50-inches of water per year, depending on type. Vegetables take about 40 to 50, and San Diego gets about 10 inches of rain per year on average.

Lawns are the largest irrigated crop in the US.

According to Denver Water: "A healthy vegetable garden needs about the same amount of water as a lawn does. If you replaced your lawn with a vegetable garden, and watered the garden efficiently by hand or with a soaker hose, you wouldn't see much difference in water consumption."

where can I put a garden?

Almost anywhere!…containers, raised beds, large plots… wherever you have space! Apartment dwellers can start with container gardening. Home owners can always find an additional sunny space for growing their own food. If you need help siting your garden, go to the Helpful Garden Links pages.
